Away From Keyboard (AFK) Inc. is an Australian charity focused on preventing technology-facilitated harm through trauma-informed education, upstream safeguarding, community prevention, and ethical technology advocacy.
AFK works to reduce vulnerability to online exploitation, coercive control, scams, grooming, technology-facilitated abuse, and emerging AI-enabled harms before they escalate into crisis, victimisation, or long-term emotional distress.
Through our Unsafe by Design framework, AFK connects global digital safety and ethical technology discussions with practical local prevention approaches supporting children, carers, educators, and vulnerable communities.
AFK combines trauma-informed education, safeguarding, systems advocacy, ethical technology engagement, community connection, and prevention-focused initiatives to reduce vulnerability before harm escalates into exploitation, coercion, victimisation, or crisis.
Our work strengthens digital literacy, emotional resilience, community awareness, and safer participation in online environments while advocating for stronger protections, accountability, and human-centred technology systems.
Many forms of exploitation, grooming, coercive control, scams, manipulation, and technology-facilitated abuse now emerge through digital systems and online environments long before warning signs become visible to schools, families, communities, or authorities.
AFK works upstream to strengthen safeguarding awareness, reduce vulnerability, and support earlier recognition of risk before harm escalates into exploitation, victimisation, coercion, or crisis.
AFK’s work demonstrates sustained prevention activity across community education, systems advocacy, child safeguarding, and ethical technology governance.
Since 2023, AFK has worked to reduce vulnerability to technology-facilitated harm by:
AFK measures impact through strengthened protective capacity, not only crisis response.

Prevention Focus Areas
Children are often exposed to digital risks before adults, systems, or institutions recognise what is happening.
AFK’s work helps protect children by strengthening the adults, communities, systems, and digital environments around them.
Our prevention approach supports child safety by:
AFK works at the intersection of community prevention, child safeguarding, digital safety, ethical AI, and systems change.
Our approach is distinctive because we do not treat digital harm as only an individual problem. We examine the systems, platforms, incentives, and design choices that allow harm to escalate.
Through Unsafe by Design, AFK connects global digital safety conversations with practical local prevention, helping communities understand emerging risks while advocating for safer systems upstream.
This is more than a conference it is a national conversation about how we align policy, practice and leadership to build safer futures for every child and family in Australia.

Digital harm extends far beyond social media. It appears in gaming environments, private messaging platforms, automated systems, AI-driven technologies, and online spaces that can influence behaviour, relationships, identity, and emotional wellbeing.
These harms can include exploitation, coercion, manipulation, scams, dependency, grooming, and psychological distress, often amplified by systems operating without sufficient safeguards or accountability.
Away From Keyboard Inc. responds through trauma-informed support, prevention-focused education, safeguarding initiatives, and systems advocacy that not only help people recover from harm but work upstream to reduce vulnerability before harm escalates.

AFK is proudly trauma-informed, community-led, and lived-experience driven. Digital harm doesn’t end when someone logs off.
It carries into daily life, affecting mental health, relationships, behaviour, and identity. Yet this connection is often overlooked or misunderstood.
AFK bridges that gap, supporting people not just in navigating online spaces but in rebuilding balance, safety, and control beyond them.
AFK believes online exploitation, grooming, coercive digital behaviours, technology-facilitated abuse, and unsafe online environments are critical child safeguarding and community safety issues requiring prevention-focused responses, stronger safeguards, and earlier intervention.
