Add your Voice

AI is already being used to evaluate and respond to family violence, and that isn't going to change. What isn't decided yet is whose experience it actually accounts for. Right now, the people carrying the most compounding disadvantage, culture, migration status, disability, sexuality, gender identity, poverty, are the least likely to see themselves in the tools being built, and that gap gets locked in the moment a standard is published, not before.

I'm Sarah Barnbrook, Founder and CEO of Away from Keyboard (AFK) and Co Vice-Chair of the IEEE Industry Connections Activity IC25-008. We are producing user centred standards for how AI is used to evaluate and respond to family violence, feeding into a white paper and formal standardisation recommendations due in 2027. Those standards will shape how frontline tools are built for years to come, so they need the widest possible range of voices in the room now, particularly people whose situations sit at the intersection of more than one form of disadvantage at once, because a standard built for only one factor at a time will fail exactly the people carrying several. I'm looking for organisations working directly with people affected by family violence wherever that intersectionality is most visible in your work. I'd like to talk about what your experience shows.
